We can’t imagined how life without the internet either for individuals or companies. Especially the company, for them the Internet has become the lifeblood of their business. Surely, Indonesia might return to the past, back to era where there is no internet.
Onno W. Purbo is an Information Technology expert in Indonesia and he felt concern about that. It feels terrible when he thinking if all internet service providers (ISPs) shut down their internet connection services.
“Definitely Indonesia will be back to the year 1994, when the Internet does not exist yet,” said Onno with regret at the headquarters of PT Indosat, Jakarta. At that time he attended a meeting to discuss about Atmanto Indar case.
As we all already know the appeal of former Managing Director of Indosat Mega Media (IM2) has been rejected, and its makes the sentence increased. This is making the ISP more afraid in doing their business.
Since they don’t want to be sent to the prison, they ask certainty about the status of their license in base by law and regulation. Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) together with other internet community helped search for legal certainty by sending a letter to the Ministry of Communications and the Supreme Court (MA).
“If the MA said that it should be applied to all, of course, we will obey the law. We will immediately turn off the internet. Not as a protest, but we do not want the same thing happen to Indar happen to us. It’s better for us to turn off the internet rather than go to jail, “said Chairman AJII, Semmy pangerapan.
It was a tough choice, but this something that must be face by the ISP. They know there will be a risk that will shutdown the business in Indonesia. But there nothing to do, if the law has been stated so, they certainly can’t do anything and can only comply with existing regulations.
According to the Chief of Network Security APJII, Irvan Nasrun, if there is a total internet shutdown in Indonesia, it will definitely going to cause tremendous harm. According to his calculations internet transactions in Indonesia for every two minutes can make around Rp. 3 billion. That means it will be a loss funds around Rp. 90 billion every hour.
“That data is only from the IDX (Indonesia stock exchanges). There will more from others online transactions such as online trading, business transactions in offices, and others. You can imagine how the total loss in a day, “he said.
What do you think would happen if the internet in Indonesia is totally dead?
